JEAN-ALEXANDRE MARICOT (1785-1848)

JEAN ALEXANDRE MARICOT

(1785? - after 1848)

Portrait of young man with coat

1822

Signed and dated: Maricot / 1822

Watercolor and gouache, oval, 14 x 12 cm

Original frame in chiseled and gilded bronze, 28 x 20.5 cm.

Large portrait of a young man signed and dated "Maricot 1822".

The man, elegantly dressed, turns to the left and is holding the cloak

lined with purple velvet. The work in question must be related to the

portrait of Arthur Wellesley, the first Duke of Wellington (1769-1852)

housed in the Walters Art Museum.

Unfortunately, the identification tag on the back has been lost over time, so at present the identity of the person depicted is not known.

Only the manufacturer's label remains on the important and magnificent frame in chiseled and gilded bronze.

JEAN-ALEXANDRE MARICOT (1785-after 1848), excellent miniaturist student of Jean-Baptiste Regnault was very active in Paris and exhibited several times at the Salon. He obtained a Great Gold Medal at the Salon of 1819,

honorable mention at the Salon of 1831, silver medal at the Douai

exhibition and we will still find him at the Salon of 1848. Although his

main production is miniature portraits he also paints in oil and watercolor on paper.

Schidlof says of him: “The miniatures of Maricot clearly show an influence of Isabey. They have a yellowish colouring with red - brown shadows and a fine, skilful and soft execution. The relief and expression of his miniatures, are remark able. Maricot was a very good miniaturist and some of his works are of great quality.”

Indeed Maricot is one of the best artists of his time for quality, but

less known due to his rarity. Often his miniatures are large, a format much appreciated by the artist.

Good general original condition, only the frame has a tiny defect in the

lower right corner and the ivory has a very lateral crack that is barely

perceptible.
