ANTOINE-PAUL VINCENT

(1798? -1825)

Portrait of Merveilleuse

Late 18th century.

Signed "Vincent"

Watercolor and gouache, rectangular

Gold metal frame

7,6 X 6,4 cm.

Another attractive portrait from the production of Antoine-Paul Vincent (born in Paris, active between 1798 and 1817), signed "Vincent" lower left.

This beautiful woman, a "Merveilleuse", is painted from the front and poses in a rose garden, as if to indicate that the young girl is a flower among flowers. Under the veil she no longer wears a wig but her hair is still powdered, typical of this transitional period. The tilted head increases the sensuality of the subject. Her jewelry and clothing evoke antiquity and her breasts are covered with a diaphanous white gauze that leaves nothing to the imagination.

"Les Incroyables et Merveilleuses" is a fashion in the Directory of France  characterized by dissipation and extravagance, in reaction to the dark sadness that the revolutionary Terror had spread.

Antoine-Paul Vincent was born and worked in Paris between the 18th century and the 19th century. He exhibited his miniatures between 1800 and 1812 at the Paris Salon.

Schidlof writes of him as a quality artist, still little appreciated, because his works are rare. He adds that some of them are reminiscent of works from Isabey's early period and equal the great master in quality.
