This beautiful portrait is identified on the back: “Jeanne de Chapeaurouge, F. de J. Fr. Fr. De Stoutz ”. She is Jeanne de Chapeaurouge (1800-1883) wife of Jean-François-Frédéric de Stoutz (1786-1871) Judge at the Court of Geneva.
The young woman, portrayed in the year of her marriage, belongs to one of the most prominent families in Geneva.
Mme Chapeaurouge sits ¾ to the right and wears a white dress with a red shawl.
Louis-Ami Arlaud-Jurine was a grandnephew of the famous Jacque Antoine Arlaud. He studied in Geneva under Liotard, and under Vien in Paris. In 1802, after 12-year stay in London, where he produced numerous portraits of the British aristocracy, Arlaud-Jurine returned to Geneva. He mainly painted miniature on ivory and enamels, but was also successful in oils, pastels, and watercolors. His account books show that he painted 1554 miniatures.
