View of the Palace and the Tuileries Garden

1821

Signed on the right; Lebelle 1821

Fixed under glass, rectangular

Tortoiseshell snuffbox, 8.9 x 5.5 cm.

View of the Palace and the Tuileries Garden, animated by numerous characters, signed on the right; Lebelle 1821.

This superb miniature is part of the Four Seasons series with the same perspective of the Tuileries garden. The flowers, the bright colors, the smoking chimneys make us understand that it is spring. We know Winter (Paris, private collection) and Autumn (Sotheby's, London, December 5, 2019, lot 331).

The romantic sky colored with warm hues, the rendering of the perspectives, the carefully described architectural details, the clarity of lights and shadows, and the characters who animate the scene, all this makes this view suggestive.

JEAN-FRANÇOIS LEBELLE (active in 1806 - died after 1831) was one of the masters of fixed under glass.

Damage to the box.
