AUGUSTIN

PAULINE MADELEINE AUGUSTIN, born DUCRUET

(1781–1865).

Portrait of a woman

Signed and dated on the right; Madame Augustin, Paris 1835

Watercolor and gouache, oval 8 x 6 cm.

Original frame in chased and gilded bronze and velvet, 17.5 x 13.5 cm.

Large miniature of exceptional quality, signed and dated on the right: Mme Augustin, Paris 1835.

Young woman, mid-length, 3/4 in purple dress with white lace collar. The transparency of the skin is admirable, on the temples we see the veins.

PAULINE MADELEINE AUGUSTIN, born DUCRUET was one of the best students of her husband JEAN BAPTISTE J. AUGUSTIN. A very talented portraitist, she exhibited at the Salon from 1822 to 1838 and obtained a 2nd class medal there in 1824.

In this portrait where the influence of JBJ AUGUSTIN is marked, the technical quality of the student equalizes with that of the master.

His works are kept in the most important museums and private collections.
